The 2005-2006 application season was "very good" for Emory University's Goizueta Business School, says Associate Dean of MBA Admissions Julie Barefoot. Not only did full-time MBA application volume rise by 15 per cent, but "We saw candidates with strong test scores, progressive work experience, impressive undergraduate academic records, and demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills. The leadership focus that we have developed has attracted outstanding applicants. We could not be happier with our incoming MBA class." To learn more about Goizueta and the reasons that more and more aspiring MBAs are drawn to it, see the transcript of our recent and exclusive admissions interview.

"Bloomington is a great college town," says Jim Holmen, Director of Admissions and Financial Aid at the University of Indiana's  Kelley School of Business. "When you have a university with 37,000 to 38,000 students, that brings a lot of energy, activity, diversity and opportunity to the community. But the real nice thing is that we're able to develop such a strong sense of community among our faculty, staff, and students." To learn more about the Kelley community and the outstanding business and leadership training that regularly place Kelley on the short list of the best U.S. business schools, see the full, 4-page transcript of our recent and exclusive admissions interview

Wharton: 3 Out of 4 Applicants Clear 'Numbers' Hurdle

The Wharton admissions office recently posted this timely reminder to b-school applicants on its MBA Admissions Blog: 75 to 80 per cent of Wharton applicants have the GMAT scores, undergraduate GPAs, and years of work experience needed to be a viable candidate for the full-time MBA program. That means that admissions decisions often turn less on these quantitative measures than they do on qualitative attributes such as leadership potential, management ability, communication skills, and personal integrity and initiative. That's why applicants are well-advised to pay close attention to the overall impact that their application package makes and to prepare their essays and interview appearances carefully. What's true for Wharton is true for any other selective b-school as well.

Exclusive Admissions Interview:
Darden Interim Director of Admissions Everette Fortner

"Darden is a rigorous program...And we don't apologize for that," notes Everette Fortner, Interim Director of Admissions and Director of Financial Aid for the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business. "One of the things we're teaching is how to stretch yourself....You not only learn the fundamental, quantitative skills, but you also learn a lot about yourself and about your leadership style and ability. The stretch part of the program is certainly by design. It's a hallmark and we believe it makes sense." Read the full, 4-page transcript of our exclusive admissions interview to learn more about the advantages that are drawing a record-high number of students to this consistently top-ranked business school.

Wall Street Journal B-School Rankings for 2006

The Wall Street Journal published its annual ranking of U.S. and international business schools last month. The WSJ rankings usually differ significantly from other rankings because they reflect corporate recruiters' opinion of the schools – and this year was no exception. By the WSJ's reckoning, the 5 top business schools in the U.S. this year are Ross, Tuck, Tepper, Columbia, and Haas. 3 of those schools – Tuck, Tepper, and Haas – were also identified as some of the most under-rated b-schools in the country. Wharton and Harvard were only ranked 7th and 14th, respectively, but won recognition as some of the best U.S. schools for finding MBA talent in accounting, finance, general management, and strategic planning. Columbia, Kellogg, Haas, Harvard, and Ross were named as the best b-schools for women. Ross, Howard, Harvard, Columbia, and Haas were named as good schools for minority recruitment.

UCLA Essays & Class of 2008 Profile

UCLA's Anderson School of Management has released its essay topics for 2007 admissions. Anderson recently welcomed 360 first-year students to campus as members of its MBA Class of 2008. Students' GMAT scores range from 540 to 780, with the average score being 704. Almost all students have two or more years of full-time work experience, the average amount being 4.8 years.

GMAT Registration Volume Up in US & Abroad

Total GMAT registration volume for the first 7 months of 2006 is 4.2 per cent higher than it was for the same period in 2005. Registrations are up by 3.5 per cent in the U.S. and by 5.7 per cent in other countries. The actual number of tests taken so far this year still lags behind that for previous years, with 2.8 per cent fewer tests taken in the U.S. and 5.3 per cent fewer taken overseas.

Recruiters Widening Search for MBA Talent

Corporate recruiters are extending their search for MBA talent to more schools, according to a recent study by the employment consulting firm MBA Scouting Report. U.S. corporations are finding a smaller pool of top MBA grads to recruit from as b-schools enroll more international students and as students increasingly opt for entrepreneurial opportunities over more conventional careers. Companies are responding to this situation by sending more recruiters to more campuses and by contacting prospective hires earlier in the b-school cycle. Some highly-sought-after prospects are even being approached the summer before they begin classes.
